Sugar Bust!

I am going to try to go off sugar (obvious processed sugar). I started yesterday and will go until Thanksgiving. then on Thanksgiving I will eat all the pie I want and then the day after I go back off sugar unitl Christmas Eve. Anybody want to join me and some friends on this sugar buster quest? If you do, here is some advice to help you to conquer your quest! (these tips are from the lazy organizer blog)

I know steering clear of sugar is a difficult thing for most people. If you are really serious about going cold turkey I want to tell you how to do it. First I'll tell you how and then I'll tell you why.
Have a REASON to do it and then DECIDE to do it. Really. Stop saying you're going to start tomorrow. Start right now!
Stop eating sugary foods, soda, juice, everything. Cut it all out of your diet and get it all out of your house.
Tell your family what you're doing and ask them to please not bring any sweets into the house or to eat them in front of you. When we went to a Chinese buffet my family moved to a different table to eat their desserts!
The first week will be difficult. All you will think about is dessert. All you can do is just suffer through it.
To make it through the first week, make a meal plan. That way you will know what you are going to eat for every meal. Don't skip meals or you will get overly hungry and vulnerable to falling off the wagon.
Next, buy every kind of snack food that you could possibly want that's not sweet. Chips, crackers, nuts, popcorn etc. You're not trying to eat healthy the first week. You're just not eating sugar. If you have other snacks available then it won't be such a hardship.
Buy lots of fruit. I know it's sweet and it has lots of sugar in it but it's good for you and for some reason I can eat all the fruit I want and it doesn't make me crave sugar. It just doesn't. Buy a box of strawberries and tell your family that this is dessert. They might complain at first but they will secretly like it and get used to it. I go to Sam's club and buy watermelons, cantaloupe, bananas, boxes of kiwi, strawberries and plums. So, fruit juice, no. Fruit, yes.
If someone offers you a brownie say, "No, thank you." A soda, "no". A candy bar; "no". A jelly bean, "NO!!!" "But thanks for asking".
The second week on will be easier. You will have that sweet taste out of your mouth and you will stop craving sugar.
You will start yearning for healthier foods. You will stop thinking about eating junk food. If you do eat junk food, it won't taste as good to you. Go with the flow. If you want to eat salad for three meals a day, do it.
Don't start eating sugar again. Remember how hard it was this time? It will be even harder the next time you try to stop. When you tell your brain you are going to stop eating sugar again it will say, "Ya, I've heard this before. I'll believe it when I see it." And then you will have visions of sugar plums dancing in your head until you give in and eat one. What is a sugar plum anyway? They sure sound tasty. I found this about sugar addictions. I haven't read her book and I don't know about her methods but I thought her website was interesting reading. Stop eating sugar for all the obvious reasons. It rots your teeth, it's bad for you, it will make you fat, etc., etc.. Here is a reason you might not have known about because I sure didn't. I only found out from my own experience. Once you stop eating sugar your food cravings will stop. Seriously, you will eat less of everything. Even foods that I normally love, I have to force myself to eat. I don't think about food like I used to. Sometimes I even forget to eat or I have to make myself stop and prepare something to eat when I'm busying doing something. Does this sound depressing? It's not. It's liberating.

CALEB'S ADVENTURES!

A few weeks ago caleb was hopping around, as he usually does when he is too lazy to grab his crutches or his wheelchair. He hopped into the kitchen and slipped and fell in Rocco Pee! yes, Rocco pee, stinkin' pup. He ended up fracutring his "little leg" just above the ankle. but it was just a hairline fracture, so nothing major just 4 more weeks of taking it easy. So Plan A is to get x-rays this week and if all is good, the fracure is healed we can move onto plan B which is to start walking with his prosthetic. Can't wait!

A CUTE STORY FROM CALEB-

Caleb came home from school one day recently and said, "Mom! I have to tell you something cute that happened at school today!" I was in the bathroom stall and there were some little boys in the stalls next to me and one little boy saw my wheelchair and said, "I wonder if that's the boy with the backwards foot!" the other little boy looked a bit farther under my stall and saw my leg and he said, "Oh my gosh! it is the boy with the backwards foot!" Caleb sat quietly in his stall, laughing to himself.

Caleb's Adventures!

A CUTE STORY FROM CALEB-

The last few weeks...

I am not doing well at keeping this updated daily but here goes whats been happening in the chapman casa these past few weeks.

Maquel went to a sleepover birthday party (and they were in the hot tub) and developed red spots on her chest, armpits and legs. 2 of Maquels best friends were also there and also developed these "red spots" One lady took her daughter into the doc and they told her it was some hottub virus, another lady was told flea bites and I was told muskum contagiouso. I thougt it was very interesting that we all got different diagnosis' from all different docs, makes you wonder how educated your doc really is. hmmm. Anyhow we learned that most all the girls that were at that party developed these spots, most of them are all in the same class at school, as well. Interesting!!! don't worry! Maquel has healed from these "red spots" and the same night at the party someone dunked Maquel into the hot tub and she chipped her two front teeth on the bench so took her into the dentist and she will have a filler that apparently because its right on the edge of her front teeth, will constantly fall off and she will just have to put it back on, no worries, just annoying. Then when she is older and her adult teeth have stopped growing they will have to crown them. Loads of fun! now on to some exciting news....

Yesterday Caleb was "fitted" for his prosthetic. They made a cast mold of his foot and leg and then they measured and measured some more. He was just ecstatic the whole time and into everything they were talking about. Caleb is content most the time but to see him so full of life was so wonderful. Next week caleb will get an x-ray to see if his leg is ready to bear weight and then in about 2 weeks we go back to othodics and he will get to wear his new leg and walk with partial weight and then he will go home with it and then complain for a few weeks and then take it back in and they will fine-tune it and polish it up and it will be ready to go. Caleb also has his one year oncology appt coming up so we were at the hospital getting many tests done. I am so sick of doctors appts and co-pays!

I have been getting back into running (I'm sure Jas is shocked). I ran 8 miles this morning and thanks to Maquel I didnt' have to go by myself. She rode her bike alongside me. After my run I went to the church and donated blood. So be a hero! Be a blood donor!

Sloane's Baptism!

Sloane's baptism was this morning. She was BEAUTIFUL! she was nervous but excited. She didn't plug her nose and I wondered why but she said that's the way I wanted to do it. There were no limbs floating above water. There were 3 girls and 1 boy all from our ward that were baptized today and the bishop had the girls stand up and show off their dresses because all 3 of the girls dresses were made by their grandma's! (so grandma's you got lots of kuddos today for the dresses). I have a few more good pics from today that I will post as soon as I get them, thanks to Hanna for taking some pics!

CHILDHOOD CANCER BILL SIGNED!

I wanted to share this wonderful news about the Conquer Childhood Cancer Bill. THE BILL HAS BEEN SIGNED. After passing unanimously in the House and Senate it went to the President. In the Oval Office, surrounded by victims of childhood cancer and their families, President Bush signed the Conquer Childhood Act into law on July 29, 2008. Quote from one news article: "...the president told Representative Pryce he was looking forward to telling his parents that he got to sign the pediatric-cancer bill into law."

I am hoping that this will open many doors in the future into childhood cancer awareness and research.

Link to the White House Photo release. On the right there is one more photo. The photo of the young girl on President Bush's desk is Caroline Walker for whom the bill was named. http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2008/07/images/20080729_d-0242-7-515h.html
